This past weekend we had the pleasure of celebrating a massive Thanksgiving at Saint James Catholic Church for the three newly ordained deacons Deacon Brad Grobbel Deacon David Jaramillo and Deacon Ryan Ruhle. All three of these men have a connection to our pastorate. Ryan Ruhle has been a member of Saint Raphael’s cathedral parish for much of his life, our parish serves as the teaching parish for David Jaramillo and Brad Grobbel spent some of those some are here working on Spanish and hospital ministry.
The celebration on Saturday was led by Bishop Donald Hying along with seminarians of the diocese and several priests who were in attendance. A huge thanks goes to the members of our parish who helped to organize the reception afterwards in the parish hall. We look forward to having Deacon David Jaramillo continue serving at our parish in the fall after his summer assignment. We will have the opportunity to hear him preach on a regular basis on the weekends and get to experience his diaconal ministry alongside our Deacon Todd Burud.
For those unfamiliar with the ministry of deacons it includes 3 primary rules: preaching the word, service at the altar, and service of the poor. This means that the Deacon can preach, and mass preside over weddings and baptisms, distribute communion as an ordinary minister and has a variety of movements and speaking parts during the liturgy. The Deacon cannot hear confessions, celebrate mass, or anoint the sick but he has a special ministry to serve those who are homebound and most in need.
These three men will then be ordained next year as priests for the diocese of Madison. Please pray for them as they begin their ministry as we give thanks to God for this gift he has bestowed upon the Diocese of Madison and Our Lady of Guadalupe Pastorate.
