Dear Family of Faith, For Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, this Advent season is a time of encounter. We began this season by reflecting on the first encounter between God and His creation, when He created us out of love. We then considered humanity's encounter with the evil one, who seduced us into disobedience. Next, we turned to God’s saving plan: to send His Son to become one with and encounter the human race. Now, we are called to respond by seeking out that encounter daily and making God present so others may encounter Him as well. 

This is the core message of our faith—the kerygma—and it is our mission to share this saving message with others.

For our parish, the encounter between Our Lady and Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in 1531 at Tepeyac is an equally significant moment in history. This encounter reminded a people most in need that they were loved, not only by Mary but by her Son, whom she bore in her womb. Just as Mary encountered Elizabeth while carrying the Savior of the world, so too did she encounter Juan Diego, pregnant with the One who would crush the serpent’s head. These encounters—with Juan Diego, Elizabeth, and the shepherds in the stable—were all meant to bring hope and light to a world filled with cold and darkness, a world without hope of freeing itself from the chains of sin and death. 

During this Advent have we prepared ourselves to encounter Christ? Have we cleansed our souls with confession? Have we meditated upon the mystery of his birth? A few days remain for us to prepare our hearts to receive and encounter our Lord at Christmas. Yet this season also reminds us to prepare for that final encounter when we see Our Loving Savior who will exchange his manger for a throne and serve as our merciful judge. We must remember that this baby is not just a human baby, but fully God. The power that breathed the stars into existence, the force that sustains the entire universe, was infused and bound up within that baby and its little baby breath. 

Lord, prepare us to meet you, in the Manger, in the womb of your Mother, in our neighbor, in the Eucharist, and finally on the throne at the end of time.

Querida Familia de Fe,

    Para la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, este tiempo de Adviento es un tiempo de encuentro. Comenzamos este tiempo reflexionando sobre el primer encuentro entre Dios y su creación, cuando nos creó por amor. Luego, consideramos el encuentro de la humanidad con el maligno, quien nos sedujo a la desobediencia. A continuación, nos dirigimos al plan salvador de Dios: enviar a su Hijo para que se haga uno con la raza humana y se encuentre con ella. Ahora, estamos llamados a responder buscando ese encuentro diariamente y haciendo que Dios esté presente para que otros también puedan encontrarlo. Este es el mensaje central de nuestra fe, el kerigma, y es nuestra misión compartir este mensaje salvador con los demás.
Para nuestra parroquia, el encuentro entre Nuestra Señora y Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin en 1531 en Tepeyac es un momento igualmente significativo en la historia. Este encuentro recordó a un pueblo muy necesitado que eran amados, no solo por María sino por su Hijo, a quien ella llevó en su vientre. Así como María se encontró con Isabel mientras llevaba en su vientre al Salvador del mundo, también se encontró con Juan Diego, embarazada de Aquel que aplastará la cabeza de la serpiente. Estos encuentros —con Juan Diego, Isabel y los pastores en el establo— tenían como objetivo traer esperanza y luz a un mundo lleno de frío y oscuridad, un mundo sin esperanza de liberarse de las cadenas del pecado y la muerte.
Durante este Adviento, ¿nos hemos preparado para encontrarnos con Cristo? ¿Hemos purificado nuestras almas con la confesión? ¿Hemos meditado sobre el misterio de su nacimiento? Nos quedan unos días para preparar nuestros corazones para recibir y encontrarnos con nuestro Señor en Navidad. Sin embargo, esta temporada también nos recuerda que debemos prepararnos para ese encuentro final cuando veamos a nuestro amado Salvador que cambiará su pesebre por un trono y servirá como nuestro juez misericordioso. Debemos recordar que este bebé no es solo un bebé humano, sino completamente Dios. El poder que dio existencia a las estrellas, la fuerza que sostiene todo el universo, fue infundida y ligada a ese bebé y a su pequeño aliento de bebé.
Señor, prepararnos para encontrarte, en el Pesebre, en el vientre de tu Madre, en el prójimo, en la Eucaristía y, finalmente, en el trono, al final de los tiempos.
